The Easy Life in Kamusari

The Easy Life in Kamusari by Shion Miura

I love these two books! The Easy Life in Kamusari and its companion, Kamusari: Tales Told at Night. They feel like cozy, meaningful visits to a world where life is grounded in nature, community, and quiet routines.

It is a lighthearted coming of age story that follows Yuki Hirano, a city kid who finds himself unexpectedly sent off to a remote forestry training program deep in the mountains of Kamusari, Japan (a fictional place, sadly). What begins as reluctant labor slowly becomes a journey of love, connection, and rediscovery. Through the rural life, Yuki is pulled out of his comfort zone into something slower and richer – a sense of belonging, a respect for the land, and a kind of peace he never expected to find.

Through Yuki’s awkward, often funny first steps into mountain life and the people he meets along the way, it felt like I was right there with them, part of their small, close-knit community where life moves differently. Both books gave me that comforting Studio Ghibli vibe, all about slowing down to nature’s rhythm, soaking the warmth of those around you, and finding meaning in the everyday pace of simple living.

There’s humour, charm, and a soft touch of whimsy magic in how the forest reshapes Yuki. It’s definitely a feel good read that left me with a book hangover.
